In-class Exercise

W.H.A.C.K!
  • What to Show (Subject)
  • How To Show it (Staging and Framing)
  • Acting (What is the subject doing how are they posed to show this)
  • Camera Angles (How do the angles change the story)
  • Kutting (How do transitions change the story, why do we change angles and what motivates a cut)

Story is the most important thing when we do story art, it dictates what we show and how we show it.

Action delineates character, we show and do not tell, characters are not cool because we say they are, but it is what they do that makes them cool, funny, heroic, evil, etc...

Storyboarding Exercise 01
R.I.B.B.I.T. (read, internalize, break it down, beats, identify key moments. thumbnail)
Remember the Principles of WHACK! (what to show, how to show, acting camera angles and kutting)

1) Read the below script and follow the principles of R.I.B.B.I.T.
2) Make a simple show map to help establish where things will be relative to each other in the world and to help reinforce where we are going with our screen direction.

3) Make scene diagrams.

4) Make layouts (backgrounds) for your boards while being mindful of your stage line, (line of interest.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*2 characters are at the park with a frisbee
(3 panels--Remember how to progress your shots.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Character 01 holds up the frisbee and throws it to
Character 02

(3 panels--Think about how you can strengthen the action.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*
Character 02
runs, jumps and catches the frisbee

(3 panels--What is most needed to tell this story?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*
Character 02
runs throws the frisbee down like he just scored a touchdown and played for the 1985 Chicago Bears
(3 panels--Are you using whole body acting for this?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Character 02 and Character 01 do a funny super bowl dance while chanting “Oh yeah, we’re the best, oh yeah!”
(What type of framing would work best for this?)
